Re: Going to the top.

Well, there's certainly no shortage of work to select from this week! A tough choice but I like tops. I took a "turn" at making them myself a while back. Made maybe a dozen or so. These tops of Chuck's are so well done and I really like the variety of sizes, shapes, colors and style. From ...

Re: Paper Joint

I have used the paper joint method many times for various projects. The best paper I have found for this is unprinted newsprint. This can be had for pennies if you are anywhere near a place where there is a web press. Newsprint comes on giant rolls and the end rolls are usually available for a few b...

Re: George's Telescope Combined Threads - TOTW 05-22-2016

I thought it would be cool to have a nut and washer on the end of the pivot pin but I just didn’t like how it looked. So I swapped out for a matching knob. I think this what is called “sweating the small stuff” and “they” say that is not good. But I figured, like Doc Brown said… “What the hell…” kno...

Re: Evolutions

!!!! Very nice! This is a departure from the “Van Gogh” look but still a logical continuation. Well balanced, eye catching and very well executed.

Re: George's Telescope Combined Threads - TOTW 05-22-2016

Finished the altitude adjustment mechanism. adjuster_1.jpg adjuster_2.jpg adjuster_3.jpg I wanted to have a stainless steel ring for the gimbal but I could not find anything that was “just right”. I ended up cutting down a part from a 2” iron pipe union. IronUnion.jpg It worked out pretty well. The ...

Re: Box Elder burl bowl

Thanks David! I only wish I could honestly say all those wonder things went through my head as I turned this. But in reality, I just put it on the lathe and see what comes of it. I do appreciate everyone's comments and insight! I think that's true for a lot of us. It's rare that I put a piece of wo...

One more revision (hopefully the last!) on this part. Height has been increased to move the adjuster into a more perpendicular position.

Re: Box Elder burl bowl

I've always liked turned spheres. And I'm not alone. There was a long discussion following Michael Gibson's most recent post regarding form. Form is a big deal for turners. If you look into it bit, the "commonly accepted ideal" for a turned vessel's form is based on human scale any anythin...

GEM Mount Polar Adjustment Mechanism Plan

GEM Mount Polar Adjustment Mechanism Plan Here is my plan for the “fine adjustment” mechanism for the mount. Basically, it’s a captured nut and a “gimbal” (dark gray) that pivots in an opening in the center brace. I’m not sure the exact geometry is correct so I will mock this up before making any of...

Something for Curt Fuller

So, I have been working on this telescope project for going on two years now and, as Curt pointed out, there has been a steady stream of mysterious parts for people to wonder what you do with. This weekend, I had the opportunity to bring a few of them together. This is the first time I have been abl...

Re: Polar shaft completed (more or less)

Ok David, you've teased us long enough with this Johnny Cash One Piece at a Time project. It's time to start showing how a few of these works of art are tied together to become a telescope. Your grandson has a long future but some of us others might not live long enough to see this come to fruition...

Re: Polar shaft completed (more or less)

Just one more thing... I wanted to have a rotational lock on this but was undecided about how to make it. Finally went simple, a threaded dowel that can be tightened to hold the shaft in position. Haven't used my thread boxes in years so it was fun to dig them out again for this... locking_1.jpg loc...

Re: What do you see?

Well now, it seems that Bob has been on a bit of a tear lately. When I first saw the persimmon bowl, I thought I had my TOTW pick. Then he posted this and, as much as I liked the persimmon bowl, I liked this better. But then he posted the sphere and I thought "all right... enough already"....

Polar shaft completed (more or less)

Here is the completed polar shaft for the telescope GEM mount. The knurled “washer” is threaded onto the end of the shaft and is used for tensioning. The “finial”, also with a knurled section, serves as a locking nut. This all worked out fairly well. The action is smooth but the bearings are not com...

Re: Baseless- Winner TOTW 8-13-2017

I would have chosen this as well. My only real issue with it is that the curved line of the stand doesn't quite match that of the form itself. That is a small nitpick but it would be easy to rectify.

Re: Wood GEM Mount: The Adventure Begins- Winner TOTW 7-16-2017

I was considering the best way to make up the shafts for the mount. The best idea seemed to be to laminate them from 4/4 stock and that was the plan until I found these. Rock maple split billets, air dried and roughed to 2.5” diameter. These are intended to be used for making baseball bats but, well...
