Counterweight

After the near death experience with the mount toppling over, I decided that I’d better come up with a counterweight right away. I will have to add weight to this once the scope is mounted but until that point I cannot determine exactly how much weight will be needed. The intention is to drill into ...

Close Call...

For almost two years now, I have devoted every spare minute and every cent I could get my hands on to my telescope project. All other ideas about things I might want to make have been pushed to the back burner. When I started out, my intent was to build a Dobsonian style mount which is a fairly simp...

Scope Rings

Scope rings done and mounted. I left a bit of “wiggle room” on the I.D. to allow for still to be applied leather liners. Next up is the pedestal.

Re: A few tops

There's been some pretty impressive work posted this week. Mike Foster's delightful treasure box, Bob Roche's carved amphora to mention a few (both of which have graced the cover on WoW). But Terry's collection of tops is tops (sorry for the pun). I've made "a few tops" myself, to give to my grandso...

Re: A Geometer's Treasure box

Can’t imagine why something like this should take a long time. Seems like you should just be able to crank them right out. Piece of cake and all that... nothing to it. Or as an old client once said when trying to get a freebe out of me, “No problem for a man like you...”

Woke up this morning thinking it was my week to do the TOTW bit. Logged in and saw that Bob had it covered. This would have been a slam dunk for me!

Re: In for a loooooong learning curve!

Well Harvey and Jim have moved the bar up pretty high. But this ain’t bad for a first outing. There is no way I would have the patience for this kind of work. Impossible for me to sit in one place long enough! Burn on.....

Custom Lathe Bed Extension

For a number of years now, I have been considering building a bed extension for my old Rockwell lathe. But the lack of real need has pushed the project onto the back burner. But now I need to turn the declination shaft for the telescope mount and that needs to be longer (42") than the 37” capacity o...

Telescope Mount Progress Report

More forward movement on the telescope mount. For some reason, this has been the most difficult part to complete so far. What amounts to a fairly straight forward piece of (mostly) flatwork ended up being unbelievably fussy. Three steps forward and two steps backwards was the order of the day. It se...

Saw this on WoW and was hoping you would post it here. An unusual form to be sure but it works. I like it enough to make it my choice for this week's TOTW.

Re: Going to the top.

Well, there's certainly no shortage of work to select from this week! A tough choice but I like tops. I took a "turn" at making them myself a while back. Made maybe a dozen or so. These tops of Chuck's are so well done and I really like the variety of sizes, shapes, colors and style. From simple "sp...

Re: Paper Joint

I have used the paper joint method many times for various projects. The best paper I have found for this is unprinted newsprint. This can be had for pennies if you are anywhere near a place where there is a web press. Newsprint comes on giant rolls and the end rolls are usually available for a few b...

Re: George's Telescope Combined Threads - TOTW 05-22-2016

I thought it would be cool to have a nut and washer on the end of the pivot pin but I just didn’t like how it looked. So I swapped out for a matching knob. I think this what is called “sweating the small stuff” and “they” say that is not good. But I figured, like Doc Brown said… “What the hell…” kno...

!!!! Very nice! This is a departure from the “Van Gogh” look but still a logical continuation. Well balanced, eye catching and very well executed.

Thanks David! I only wish I could honestly say all those wonder things went through my head as I turned this. But in reality, I just put it on the lathe and see what comes of it. I do appreciate everyone's comments and insight! I think that's true for a lot of us. It's rare that I put a piece of wo...

Re: Box Elder burl bowl

I've always liked turned spheres. And I'm not alone. There was a long discussion following Michael Gibson's most recent post regarding form. Form is a big deal for turners. If you look into it bit, the "commonly accepted ideal" for a turned vessel's form is based on human scale any anything that dev...
