I commented on this elsewhere, Mike, and I still like it here. You are capable of a unique set of mental gymnastics to do these minimal surface vessels. congratulations on TOTW. -- Dick

Re: Going to the top.

A great variety working in a simple format -- this is a good exercise in design and will show up when your wrist (me too, what happened there?) is back in better shape. All for a good cause. -- Dick

Simple and elegant nice shape nice wood nice contrast in color. And I may borrow that idea of a cabochon on the inside of the lid. -- Dick

Re: Oak burr and slate sculpture.

Nice, Les -- this series just goes way out into art -- You show what can be done using a lathe, then paying attention to texture, color, design and contrast in materials - wood, leather and stone - that you manage to keep in harmony -- This is not an artsy bowl or a decorated platter -- its just art...

Re: Tidal Treasure- Winner TOTW 11-5-2017

Thanks for TOTW, Bob. I'm just getting settled back in Arizona and am completely unstuck from time. I'm still waiting for all my UPS boxes of turning tools to arrive. The tracking feature is helpful, but "delayed in Illinois" is not real comforting when 3 boxes have arrived and the 4th is ...

Re: Jack Skellington Ornaments

OK, Curt -- thanks for straightening me out on Jack Skellington -- I may have have seen Tim Burton's movie at some time, but it obviously didn't stick with me. The rest of the story on these ornaments is interesting a very worthwhile collaboration! And the name of the guy who uses segmented plywood ...

Re: Jack Skellington Ornaments

Lots to talk about here, Curt. I like the holiday themed ornaments -- only this holiday seems to be Halloween! It shows your imagination in adapting familiar ideas to your own sense of humor. I think that's the essence of creativity -- take the familiar and tweak it just a bit to make a personal sta...

I really like Les's perception that this reminds him of the letter "R" I hadn't seen that before. I like this sculptural series -- it blends many aspects of your personal design inclinations and references techniques of your teachers -- I am looking forward to seeing the next generation, a...

Re: WIP

I agree with Hughie -- nice to see these pieces in progress to see how people work through their designs. I'd carve a little more on the ginkos, then see how the planes of the design look before deciding whether or not to color. Also -- what's that little cared green vessel in the background on thes...

Re: George's Telescope Combined Threads - TOTW 05-22-2016

I'm with Mike -- still following along, and, at this point, very much invested in the whole process -- this should be going straight to the Renwick Gallery when you get it finished. After you write the descriptive book. --

Tidal Treasure- Winner TOTW 11-5-2017

A while ago, Bob R. and I took a workshop on embellishing with dry brush painting and gold leafing with Jacques Vesery. The project was to make a spoon to do the decoration on. Bob finished up and posted two spoons very quickly. Very nice. I'm just getting around to posting the one I made. The crab ...

Re: Saturday Evening in Jacksonville, IL

Very nice, Steve. I looked up Jacksonville and the Strawn Gallery, and that's quite a place. It looks like the opening reception went well and the pieces you've displayed are a good intro to wood art for all who see them. I share Mike's admiration for the big, big piece on the mantle - a real show s...

Lotsa Sanding

I didn't really intend to post these "in progress" pictures, but traffic has seemed light on the site lately, so I thought I'd contribute something. I stay busy with little projects most weeks.  But I always have more complicated ones going on long term, too.  I've finally got this one,tha...

Re: Walnut Calabash

Size matters, Curt. I heard that somewhere. And that's what I especially like about this piece. It's hard, online, to get a feel for the physical presence of a piece from the picture. This one could as easily be 4" as 9". But knowing it's bigger makes me more interested in it. All the elem...

Nicely done, Curt. It took some imagination to see this shape in a chunk of wood, then to get it turned out. I'm with David in liking the grain orientation around the rim. -- Dick

Re: Gone awry

This is a nice piece, Chuck nice wood and nice form -- as for the inserts, they are what they are. My inclination would be to do more of them around the circumference of the bowl, even where repairs weren't needed -- some more lines and sprinkle in some round light shapes using dowels in drilled hol...

I have been traveling, so I'm late to this party. I agree with much that has been said. I like the color, texture and contrast with the collar. As for the form, This is your design, so I presume you got what you wanted. I tried to picture the drailles texture on a differently shaped vessel, and none...
