Hi from Brisbane,Australia

Have not been wood turning all that long but enjoying the challenges that come from turning some very hard Australian woods such as Mulga and Red Gum ( a Eucalyptus species AKA Blue Gum & River Red Gum ). Also the much softer hardwood & aromatic Camphor Laurel which grows as a declared weed in nearby Southern areas (and yields wonderful timber 2700mm x 400- 600mm wide x 50mm thick, it is a fairly large weed !! )- doing some platters, bowls, small nik- nak bowls segmented using CL & Silky Oak as contrasting timber.

Also do some band saw boxes , router boxes, kids furniture ( tables & chairs, dolls cots ) what ever helps keep me out of trouble so to speak.

Wanting to learn a lot more on finishing works beyond burnishing oils, beeswax, carnauba wax and tung oil. Most of my Red Gum is finished at 1200 grit and carnauba wax with some of the mulga pieces polished to 3000 grit and then left without any applied finish - silky soothe with wonderful grain refraction.

Regards Richard

Good morning, Richard. Welcome to WTU -- You'll find that this site is more thorough that many others and we look forward to coming along as you're on your turning journey. I don't know how much we may be able to help you with advice on your local timbers -- you may end up educating us as you work with them. -- Dick
