First spiral- Winner TOTW 9-10-2017

Post by barry richardson » Tue Sep 05, 2017 11:17 am

Haven't been here in a long time, I only allow myself time for one forum and I'm heavily involved in another, my apologies.... But I wanted to post this and give a big thanks to Hughie Mackay for his excellent tutorial he posted here on spiral carving. It provided all the information I needed to get rolling. Made from locally harvested Sissoo AKA Indian Rosewood, Florida Rosewood, Sheesham... about 11"tall and lacquer finish. Thanks again Hughie!

That's a beauty Barry. Hughie is a master on these forms for sure. Looks like nice timber and finished nicely.

Hughie is the master! I'm guessing that your spirals go the other direction because you are in the northern hemisphere. ;) Hey, great job. Great that Hughie shared his wisdom with you. Looks like you paid attention and followed his lead...

Really nicely done! Glad you found the tutorial in the front page archives. There's still a lot of really good information there even though it has been inactive for some time now.

Impressive Barry, I like everything about it especially the finish. 2thumbsup It could be easily one of mine :D Love the way you have kept the sap wood to carve through, its not a common idea .

Barry,
I really like the smooth curve of the hollow forms profile. For some reason that is hard to maintain. So many including some of my own “duck in” right near the foot. The carved spirals are uniform and make a nice shadow line around the vessel. Your choice of wood offers wonderful variety depending on how it’s turned. For the above reasons this is my choice for Turning of the Week. Congratulations.

I'll add my compliments on getting TOTW for this one, Barry -- it's a beaut. I especially like the brave third view that shows the inside.. From what I see it looks good to me. Nicely done all around. -- Dick
